Injuries played a significant role in professional tennis in 2016, with some of the biggest stars in the sport sidelined with ailments. Roger Federer was unable to play for most of the year due to a serious knee injury he suffered at home in 2015, depriving fans of one of the most beloved figures in the sport.

After missing the French Open, Federer played well at Wimbledon, but he re-injured the knee once again in a fall during his loss in a match against Milos Raonic, which subsequently kept him out of the Olympics and the US Open. Rafael Nadal also suffered a wrist injury during the French Open, which forced him to withdraw from the tournament, though he was able to win a gold medal in Rio with doubles partner Marc Lopez.
